Alex Lora’s short film The Masterpiece won best short at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and was selected to air at this year’s Centre Film Festival. Addressing themes of poverty, nature, immigration and identity, the film follows a wealthy couple who form a relationship with two immigrant scrap dealers after they meet at a recycling center. Lora will return to the festival this year to introduce The Masterpiece to local audiences. “I was struck by the friendliness of the people and the beauty of the surrounding area, especially in the fall,” Lora says. “The vibrant college-town vibe provided the perfect backdrop for the festival, a great setting for creative inspiration and relaxation.

Centre Film Festival fosters community, economic development in sixth year

The Centre Film Festival, founded by Pearl Gluck and Curt Chandler, promotes indie films and fosters community and economic growth in Centre County, Pennsylvania. Now in its sixth year, the festival has expanded from a weekend event to a weeklong celebration, screening 100 films in various categories. It also helps local businesses and attracts out-of-town visitors, while providing Penn State students with free access to screenings and opportunities to engage with industry professionals.

Centre Film Festival Winners Shine at Oscars

The 2023 Centre Film Festival showcased films that have since gained Oscar recognition, including Fancy Dance and Letter to a PigFancy Dance, directed by Erica Tremblay and starring Lily Gladstone, won Best Actress and Best Film at the festival, while Letter to a Pig, an animated short by Tal Kantor, won Best Animated Short Film. The festival continues to grow in popularity, attracting filmmakers and audiences alike, and has become an integral part of the local arts scene, fostering community engagement and contributing to Centre County’s cultural and economic development.
